As we are all aware, global efforts are in progress on containing the spread and mitigating the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19), a novel respiratory disease that was first detected in China and has now spread to 60 countries worldwide. COVID-19 was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization on Jan 30, 2020.
Cases have now been detected in California, Oregon and Washington and the community spread in Washington has resulted in the first death in the United States as of Feb 23, 2020.
Per CDC, more cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) will likely be identified in the near future which means at some point a widespread transmission could occur in The United States.
The National Sikh Organization urges everyone with the community to exercise extreme care and caution during this time so as to ensure we can all remain safe and protected from the risk of exposure.
Please exercise the below preventative actions with immediate caution and spread the word within the community to increase awareness:-
· Get a flu vaccine.
· If you are sick with flu, stay away from others and receive immediate medical care
· Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
· Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
· Wear a face mask when in public places as these can offer a certain level of protection too.
· Seek early medical help if you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, and share your travel history with healthcare providers.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth often.
· Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
The National Sikh Organization wants to offer as much support and know-how as possible during this critical time. Please feel free to post additional questions/concerns you have on this topic and NSO would be happy to provide responses to the best of our ability.

The National Sikh Organization instituted 2 key initiatives to serve individuals and communities that were most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. These initiatives primarily focused on 2 key demographics, the frontline workers, and those that were most at risk of exposure. Both initiatives experienced great success since their inception and allowed the National Sikh Organization to expand its outreach and service offerings to local communities in an organic fashion. Below are the details on the initiatives that were run and successfully managed by the volunteers and teams of the National Sikh Organization.
Meals for Frontline Workers
The National Sikh Organization has provided meal assistance to frontline workers who are dedicated day and night to save lives and fighting to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic. This service allows donors to donate meals to participating Hospitals, Sheriff Offices, and Paramedics. Strict protocols are followed to ensure that meals are delivered in a safe and contactless manner to healthcare workers. Food is prepared in a commercial kitchen with a health score of 100, individually packaged and delivered per the instructions provided by the healthcare staff contacts at hospitals and sheriff county offices. Thus far, the National Sikh Organization has donated countless meals to the emergency staff at various hospitals and county sheriff offices.
Free Grocery Delivery Service
The National Sikh Organization has worked tirelessly to assist with grocery and essentials supplies to those within the community that are most affected by the COVID-19 impact. This service targeted citizens that are over the age of 60 and incapacitated or in isolation, pregnant/nursing, or currently immobile, and provided assistance with free delivery of groceries and other critical supplies at their doorstep in a contactless manner. To date, the National Sikh Organization has made several grocery runs to assist local citizens that needed assistance.
We want to thank our gracious donors who have donated to our causes and rendered support to the critical work our volunteers have been doing to support those who were most affected by the recent impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are humbled and continue to stay committed to ensuring that our local communities are served to the best of our abilities and are aware of the latest happenings on the novel Coronavirus disease.
We are unabashedly progressive and we are working tirelessly to ensure that we are standing alongside all individuals dealing with healthcare-related distress and continue marching forward towards effectuating our critical mission and vision values.
